Squid Game season 3 spoilers follow.
Squid Game fans have reacted to the “mesmerising” cameo from an A-list Hollywood star in the series finale.
The South Korean dystopian thriller returned to Netflix on Friday (27 June) with its third and final season, with the latest six instalments bringing an end to the story that became a breakout success in 2021.
As Seong Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) story came to its conclusion, the series finale – titled ‘Humans Are…’ – included a surprising cameo from Cate Blanchett, who appeared in the last minutes as an American recruiter for the game show.
Fans of the series were understandably surprised by Blanchett’s cameo, with one viewer writing on X: “Seeing Cate Blanchett in squid game as the recruiter is the best thing I [have] ever witnessed.”
“Oh my goodness nobody told me Cate Blanchett is in Squid Game,” wrote one viewer, with another remarking: “Bro, I thought she quit acting??? what in the world is the Cate Blanchett doing here??? #SquidGameSeason3 #SquidGame3”.
This sentiment was echoed by another viewer as they wrote: “CATE BLANCHETT WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? #SquidGame3,” with one other user asking: “OMG, Cate Blanchett, is this a confirmation of #SquidGame spinoff series from a different country???”
White it is unclear if Blanchett’s appearance has any bearing on David Fincher’s upcoming English-language adaptation, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the decisions behind the actor’s cameo, describing her presence as “mesmerising”.
“We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing,” he told Tudum. “And as for why [we chose] Cate Blanchett, she’s just the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn’t love her? So we were very happy to have her appear.
“We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just one or two words, which is exactly what she did… During the shoot, she reminded me of what true talent looks like. Even with just a few looks and lines, her performance was mesmerising.”
