Outlander actor Graham McTavish has opened up about the advice he gave one Blood of My Blood cast member.
McTavish, who plays Dougal MacKenzie in the Starz series, spoke to fellow actor Sam Retford, who portrays the younger version of the MacKenzie Clan War Chieftain in the Outlander prequel series.
McTavish exclusively told Reach Screen Time: “I said that first of all, he’s a complex character. One minute you’ll hate him, the next minute you’ll love him and I said that’s important to remember.
“Also, always remember that Dougal does everything for a super-objective, and my super-objective was the restoration of the Stuart monarchy. That was it. Everything else led to that.
“So, I can cheat, I can kill, I can lie, I can do anything as long as it’s for that cause.
“So I really tried to emphasise to Sam that Dougal is somebody that really passionately believes in this one thing and justifies everything else around it. So, that was some of the advice I gave him.”
Retford is going to be playing a much younger version of Dougal, but audiences will be given glimpses of the character fans are familiar with in Outlander.
Blood of My Blood will see Dougal and his brother Colum MacKenzie (Seamus McLean Ross) taking over the clan in the wake of their father’s Red Jacob MacKenzie’s (Peter Mullan) death.
Moreover, the brothers will be trying to marry off their sister Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) in a prudent match to strengthen the clan’s position.
But Ellen will have other ideas, particularly after she encounters Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) at the Great Gathering after Jacob’s demise.
Season two of Outlander sadly saw Dougal meet his maker after he got into a fight with his nephew Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and wife Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe).
During his time on Outlander, the older iteration of Dougal was known to be suspicious, aggressive, but always had a keen eye for the ladies.
Some of these traits are expected to be seen in young Dougal, with fans already getting promised nods to the parent series.
