Despite tough competition from places like Hawaii, Outlander star Sam Heughan declared Cape Town his all-time favourite destination. From the coffee and the culture to the people and the breathtaking views, Sam gushed about it all, and we think it’s safe to say the Mother City has stolen this Scottish actor’s heart!
Cape Town, South Africa (14 July 2025) – Renowned for its insanely stunning views, delicious cuisine, city attractions and wine farms, Cape Town just has a way of leaving a lasting impression on just about anyone who visits it, something Outlander star Sam Heughan had a lot to say about!
In a recent episode of The Travel Diaries Podcast, Sam couldn’t stop gushing about his all-time favourite destination, Cape Town!
During an interview with Holly Rubenstein, where he shared all about some of his best and most insightful travel experiences, Sam revealed that while Hawaii was a strong contender, Cape Town ultimately stood out as one of his most memorable destinations.
“It is somewhere that I’ve been for work. A few times, we shot Outlander there. I’ve shot Bloodshot there, an action movie with Vin Diesel, and earlier on in my career, shot a bunch of adverts for Scotland beers.
“Over the years, been such an incredible place. The landscape, the culture, the people, the food is incredible, and I think the reason I like it is because it feels on the edge of sort of civilisation or in terms of there’s a wildness to it. From the ocean to the mountains to the wildlife, yeah, I enjoy that, shares Sam on UK’s #1 award-winning travel podcast.
He went on to paint a picture of the perfect day in Cape Town which entails waking up to go get some coffee, “because the coffee there is amazing”, walking up Lion’s Head to get a view of 270 degrees of incredible coastline with Table Mountain is right behind you before going out to try some amazing sushi, steak or braai at one of the local eateries for dinner.
And for the wine lovers, Sam recommends the Babylonstoren Wine Estate, which produces incredible rosé and boasts picturesque gardens where ingredients are sourced directly for the dinner table.
He also shared about the Cape Tip, where you can see the two oceans colliding, something he describes as “truly special”.
Just from those descriptions alone, it’s not hard to understand why Cape Town has captured this Scottish man’s heart!
