While fans of Outlander are waiting for Season 8 to air, which will most likely happen sometime in 2026, Caitríona Balfe, who stars as Claire Fraser in the STARZ epic time-travel drama, has moved on to other projects.
The actress is currently starring in the edge-of-your-seat, modern-day thriller, The Amateur, starring opposite Rami Malek, currently streaming on Hulu. And today it was announced that she will return to the 18th century for a role in Sense and Sensibility.
Balfe will appear in the fresh take on Jane Austen’s classic from Focus Features and Working Title Films, along with the previously announced Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, respectively.
Balfe made her own announcement on Instagram, writing, “I am so thrilled to be joining this excellent cast for this exciting project. In the 250-year anniversary of Austen’s birth, with the visionary Georgia Oakley at the helm, a new Sense and Sensibility for a new generation. So proud to be Mother to these amazing young women “
Her Outlander co-stars Sam Heughan and Lauren Lyle immediately replied with well-wishes. Heughan, who plays Balfe’s TV husband Jamie Fraser, wrote, “Ooooh mr Pickering!!”
And Lyle, who plays Marsali Fraser, wrote, “The QUEEEEEN!”

According to Focus Films, Sense and Sensibility is the tale of “the timeless exploration of restraint and passion as it follows sisters Elinor (Edgar-Jones) and Marianne Dashwood (Creed-Miles), opposites in their emotional approach, as they navigate love, loss, and financial uncertainty amid the societal expectations of 18th-century England.”
In addition to Outlander, Balfe’s credits include Belfast, Ford v Ferrari, The Amateur, Now You See Me, and Super 8. She has been nominated for five Golden Globes — once for her supporting role in Best Picture nominee Belfast and four times consecutively for her lead role in Outlander. Balfe is also a BAFTA nominee for Belfast and a three-time Critics Choice nominee on behalf of Outlander.
