Buffy fans rejoice: there’s a new lead Slayer in Sunnydale and has OG Sarah Michelle Gellar’s seal of approval.
The highly-anticipated Buffy reboot will see Gellar reprising the role of Buffy Summers, but she won’t be the only Slayer.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Ryan Kiera Armstrong has joined the Buffyverse for the Hulu pilot order, set to be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker and Buffy superfan Chloé Zhao. Poker Face co-showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are on writing duties for the episode.
Not much is known about Armstrong’s role, though casting materials described the character as an introverted high-school student.
Gellar, who executive produces the reboot, has shared a video of herself breaking the news to a visibly emotional Armstrong.
“You want to be my chosen one?” Gellar asks Armstrong in the sweet clip.
“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” Gellar wrote in the caption.
“To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
It is understood the two Slayers will team up to “save the world” in this continuation of the story beloved by so many.
Lilla and Nora Zuckerman echoed Gellar’s feeling in their own statement concerning the casting of Armstrong.
“We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,” they said.

Armstrong — who has promptly and understandably added “slayer” to her Instagram bio — shared her excitement at undertaking the role in a post.
“I’m so beyond thankful and excited to share that i am going to be apart of the BTVS universe!!!” she wrote. “I am so excited for this journey with you @sarahmgellar. i am in awe of you.”
She went on to thank her agents and director Chloé Zhao “for trusting me” as well as sharing her joy at working with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
“I’m still in so much shock and disbelief,” she noted. “Finally, thank you to my amazing parents that have allowed me to do my dream, love uuuu. I WONT LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!”
