James Gunn has set the record straight about those new Henry Cavill rumours about a potential return to DC.
There was speculation that the Superman actor would appear as a new character, Frankenstein, in the wider universe, which Gunn has denied.
One fan asked Gunn if the rumours were true, to which the new DC boss replied on Twitter: “Completely false. We have our Frankenstein – our first choice – & it’s not Henry. Was never discussed with him.”
Some fans suggested that Gunn’s tweet was a dig at Cavill, but he made it clear that while Superman (and now Frankenstein) is not on the cards, another role could be.
He tweeted: “It’s on various news sites & I was asked about it. You might consider that this bile you think comes off in my post has more to do with your framing than what I’m actually saying.
“I’ve said in the past we’ve discussed other roles with Henry – just Frankenstein is not one of them.”
Since the Guardians of the Galaxy director took over as head of the established franchise with Peter Safran, they have overhauled the cast and upcoming slate of movies to take the franchise in a new direction.
At the time, Gunn asked fans to be patient and trust their vision, as he knew not all of the decisions, such as axing Wonder Woman 3 and Cavill as Superman, would not be well received.
He explained: “Peter [Safran] & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.”
“We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”
Back in January, the new co-chairs announced several new projects on the horizon at DC, including both a new Superman and Batman movie.
