The series of Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon were best-selling novels in their own right long before the STARZ TV series came along, but the hit show with its perfect casting of Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and Caitríona Balfe as Claire Beauchamp drew millions more into the epic time-traveling romance.
Outlander, the series, will finish with Season 8, which will air most likely sometime later this year, and it was written before Gabaldon finished the 10th book in the series. That book is still not finished, according to a Facebook post that Gabaldon wrote on May 1, but she is finally revealing its title: A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out.
It sounds as if it could be bad news for Jamie Fraser, but Gabaldon doesn’t want readers to jump to any conclusions.
“NO, that doesn’t mean Jamie’s going to die,” she clarified. “It’s not a death blessing, it’s the Blessing of St. Michael, said for a warrior about to go and do something important and possibly dangerous. There are quite a few people in this book who qualify for that blessing, believe me….”
Up until now, Gabaldon hadn’t confirmed that Book 10 would be the final chapter in the lives of Jamie and Claire, but she has now confirmed that, saying, “Yes, this is the final book of the main series, though there may be other companion books and side stories, depending on how long I live…”
Note: The author is 73.
As mentioned, since A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out is still not finished, it has no publication date. The publishers won’t set a date until Gabaldon turns in the manuscript but she’s still writing it. But now, maybe that they have the title, they will be able to create the book jacket.
Gabaldon also wants to make sure we know: “YES, I DO KNOW HOW IT ENDS. NO, I’M NOT TELLING YOU.”
