House of the Dragon spoilers follow.

House of the Dragon star Sonoya Mizuno has broken down an unscripted kiss in the show’s latest episode.

In last weekend’s episode ‘Smallfolk’, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Mysaria (Mizuno) shared an intimate kiss after Mysaria opened up about her past in a vulnerable moment.

Opening up about the scene, Mizuno revealed that the kiss “wasn’t scripted” originally, telling TheWrap: “I think it was scripted as… there’s just breath between them or something, and then whatever happens is interrupted.”

She explained that D’Arcy and showrunner Ryan Condal conducted “many conversations” beforehand about the storyline, though D’Arcy played the key role in how things turned out on screen.

“Because we were separate in the room… [and] Mysaria has told this story, [D’Arcy] felt the instinct to hold her, to comfort her,” Mizuno recalled. “From that, it felt so organic to go into the kiss.”

The two actors didn’t want the scene to feel “queer-baity in any sense,” though the hug itself made the kiss feel “emotionally so right”.

Mizuno also suggested that Mysaria received such love as a child from her mother, adding: “I don’t think either of them have been hugged like that in a long time, if not ever.

“I think it was the hug – the intimate vulnerability of that hug – which which morphed into this very tender and passionate kiss, which was quite… amazing. I think it’s very thrilling in the moment for both of them.”

In other news, the latest episode of the show saw an unexpected return of Viserys in visions by Daemon, with star Paddy Considine reprising his role as the late king for the cameo.

Reacting to his appearance, the actor said of coming back to the show for the one-off appearance: “It was brief, but I can’t tell you how happy I was to go back to @houseofthedragonhbo to see my old friends.”
