House of the Dragon fans have been given their first proper look at season 2 with the release of a brand new trailer.

The Game of Thrones prequel series is due to finally return next summer, with war brewing in Westeros over the Iron Throne.

In the clip, we follow the aftermath of King Viserys’s death and the ascension of King Aegon II, as Queen Alicent Hightower declares: “The war will be fought, many will die, and the victor will eventually ascend the throne.”

We are then promised “a war between kin” by Rhaenys, and “no war so bloody as a war between dragons”, before shots of warfare and dragons galore.

It comes after a first look at the new episodes was released ahead of the trailer in a series of character posters of D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Targaryen and Olivia Cooke’s Hightower.

The next season of the show was largely unaffected by the recent Hollywood strikes as the UK cast is part of a different union, and is set to meet its release date next summer.

The 10-episode first season of the show debuted last year to huge acclaim, though the second season will run a bit shorter at eight episodes.

“There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour,” director Claire Kilner explained to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Ryan’s [Condall, showrunner] decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events.”
