Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have become worldwide stars following their time on time-travelling drama, Outlander.

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe share a close bond on-screen and off.

The pair are best known for capturing the hearts of viewers with their portrayal of husband and wife Jamie and Claire Fraser in Outlander

Throughout the years, the co-stars have spoken highly of one another, often admiring each other’s talents while on the set of the Starz show.

During an interview with EW, the Scots star reflected on the first time they met while taking a chemistry test.

“We just started chatting in the [chemistry] test before we started the audition, and we just seemed to get on.

“Her humour is fantastic. She’s great fun to work with. She’s very hardworking, a wonderful actress, very natural.”

And Caitriona also praised her co-star: “We’re really good friends,” she told PEOPLE when the series first premiered.

“We’re both going through the same experience, so that’s great, we both really understand that. I hope I’m as good support as he is to me.

And in a nod to their sweet friendship, the Jamie Fraser star previously admitted his on-screen wife has almost “all the qualities” he would like in a romantic partner.

In 2023, the pair took part in the Vanity Fair Game Show where they had to ask each other questions to find out how well they know one another.

Caitriona was tasked with answering what qualities Heughan looks for in a romantic partner, to which he joked for her to “keep it clean”.

She first wrote down “must like fitness” with Heughan agreeing: “That’s true. That’ll do. ‘Must like fitness’. Easy.”

Caitriona, with Sam’s approval, then went on to list as kind, adventurous, great at conversation and, according to the Claire Fraser star, “borderline alco[holic].”

Upon looking at the list, Sam noted: “I hate to say, these are actually kind of all qualities that you like apart from the fitness…”

“Yeah, no I don’t care about fitness”, Caitriona insisted, with Sam reconfirming: “You are kind of those.”

Caitriona joked: “Yeah. Anyway, if you fill out these criteria, call Sam on…Or just slide into his DMs.”

Despite their close-knit bond and admiration for each other, off-screen the pair share a close platonic relationship, with many fans wondering if it could ever be more than that due to their undeniable chemistry and saucy sex scenes.

Speaking of the fan’s fascination with the parts friendship, Sam said: “It’s a nice bond and I think people are fascinated by it, in a weird way — I know the fans are. We respect each other and have got each other’s backs”

However, Caitriona has been married to long-term boyfriend Tony McGill – who is also from Ireland – since 2019, announcing their engagement at the 2018 Golden Globes.

In August 2019, Caitriona and Tony held a private wedding ceremony, surrounded by their closest friends and family.

The pair have never shared photos of their big day, with the Claire Fraser star telling The Philippine Daily Inquirer in 2020: “What was most beautiful about it is that I had my very close family and friends there.”

In 2021, the pair welcomed their baby son – with the actress never publicly announcing her pregnancy and, much like with their nuptials, news of their baby was a surprise.

In terms of Sam’s private life, the 42-year-old is currently single and is often dubbed ‘one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors’.
