It prequel Welcome to Derry has received a straight-to-series order from streamer HBO Max.
First announced almost a year ago, the project follows the hit two-part movie series, adapted from Stephen King’s horror novel about Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
Andy Muschietti (who directed both It chapters) and his sister Barbara came up with an original story for the show, while Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) is onboard to write the first episode.
Deadline also reports that Muschietti will call ‘ACTION!’ on several instalments.
“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!” said Stephen King, the ‘King of Horror’ in a statement.
Thrilled to be working in hallowed King territory once again, the Muschiettis shared in a joint statement: “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces.
“It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humour, humanity, and horror.”Screenwriter and actor Fuchs, who portrayed Richie Tozier’s manager in It: Chapter Two, said: “To be able to return to the world of my all-time favourite horror novel and help build upon the singularly brilliant cinematic universe created by Andy and Barbara is more than the opportunity of a lifetime, it’s a dream come true — or, maybe more appropriately, a nightmare.”
Welcome to Derry will stream on HBO Max in the US.
