The time-travel romance saga, Outlander, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, has concluded its penultimate season, leaving fans eager for what lies ahead. Season 8 is set to bring the epic love story of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe) to an emotional end. After navigating the tumultuous waters of the Revolutionary War in the latest season, it’s uncertain exactly how the couple has emerged from the chaos. Despite facing challenges that have threatened to tear their family apart, Jamie and Claire seem ready to give audiences one final chapter.
In anticipation of the eighth and final season, Starz has released a new teaser that highlights Jamie’s enduring love for Claire. In the clip, Jamie passionately declares, “And the day shall come when we do part. If my last words are not, ‘I love you,’ you ken it’s because I dinna have time.” While the sentiment may reflect Jamie’s unwavering devotion to his Sassenach, it also leaves room for speculation. Could it hint at a bittersweet conclusion where the iconic couple is separated permanently?
An Explosive Finale Ahead
As the Starz original series prepares to wrap up, viewers can expect more than just a farewell to Jamie and Claire’s legendary romance. Key characters like Sophie Skelton’s Bree and her husband, Roger (Richard Rankin), will also take the spotlight. Bree and Roger’s journey in Season 7 was rife with drama, and according to Skelton, Season 8 promises even greater intensity.
“The final season is going to blow people’s minds a little bit,” Skelton teased. “The fans have been put through the wringer coming into the second half of this season—we’ve really played with the emotional heartstrings. But I feel like the end of the season is just a bit more of a nice sigh of relief, maybe a little bit more peaceful. But then Season 8, we’re just going to mess you up again emotionally. I think it’s a really big and a really magnificent season. I’m excited for the fans to get to see it.”
Expanding the ‘Outlander’ Universe
Although the main series will conclude with Season 8, fans have more to look forward to. A prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is also in the works. The spinoff will explore the love stories of Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), as well as Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy).
Diana Gabaldon, the original author, revealed her involvement in the prequel and the upcoming season, sharing that she will be contributing scripts to both. “It’s so much easier than writing novels,” Gabaldon explained. “It takes me three weeks tops to write a scene. I will be writing a script for the prequel [Blood of My Blood] and one for Season 8 [of Outlander].”
Fans can stream Outlander Season 7 now on the Starz app, with Season 8 promising to deliver a heartfelt and powerful conclusion to this beloved story. While there is no official release date for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, it is expected to debut this summer. Stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates and news about the Outlander universe.
