The much-loved Outlander cast is still hard at work completing the highly anticipated seventh season of the award-winning drama.

And as fans are doing what they can to fill their time during Droughtlander, some have been taking a look back at Diana Gabaldon’s original series of bestselling novels and it has sparked some questions about the Fraser clan timeline.

Recently, fans realised that Fergus Fraser (played by César Domboy) is much younger in the Outlander series than he is in the novels.

Highlighting the inconsistency, Redditor 2003CDiana posted: “The show makes it seem like Fergus and Ian are a bit closer in age.

“Bree and Fergus don’t interact much on screen so I am not really sure how we are supposed to view their age.

“I am also not sure if Marsali is supposed to be the same age or younger than Bree.”

In the series, Fergus is portrayed by 32-year-old César, while Young Ian star John Bell is currently 25.

However, in Diana’s books, their age difference is more than double the seven-year gap between the two co-stars reports the Express.

Brianna star Sophie Skelton is also slightly younger than Marsali’s actress at 28, while Lauren Lyle is 29.

According to the novels, the post continues: “Fergus was born in 1735, Young Ian 1752, Brianna 1948 and Marsali in 1751.”

Unfortunately for Outlander’s die-hard fans, it appears the Starz adaptation hasn’t taken much care to ensure the ages of their actors match up with those of the characters.

While the epic historical drama has traversed across three decades of the 18th Century, the show’s core cast hasn’t appeared to age more than a few years.

This has made keeping track of the Fraser clan’s ages considerably difficult, especially given the fact their exact birth dates have been supplied in the original novels.

Although Claire and Jamie’s progeny all appear to be around the same age, Fergus at least is supposed to look markedly older than his wife and young cousin.

“I am not really sure how to calculate the other three age differences with Brianna’s.

“But I think she would be 13 years younger than Fergus, four years older than Young Ian and five years older than Marsali.”

Brianna’s age makes things a little more difficult, as she would have been born in 1746 before Claire decided to return to the 20th Century.

Even so, she is still meant to be several years older than both Young Ian and Marsali, despite all three being in their mid-to-late 20s.

“Fergus is way older than Ian but in the show they seem to be peers of the same age more or less,” @m3l_29 added.

“I was surprised when I read the books and saw the age gap between them.”

As Outlander heads into its seventh season, it’s quite possible the actors could be aged up by makeup to more accurately reflect the passage of time depicted in Diana’s bestselling novels.
