Netflix’s One Piece live-action series is set to get a big change, with Matt Owens announcing his departure.

The show’s co-showrunner announced on Friday (March 21) that he’s decided to step down from his role after six years of working on the Netflix adaptation of the iconic anime.

Matt – who was showrunner alongside Joe Tracz – posted a statement to Instagram that said he’d be leaving the show to focus on his wellbeing.

“The last 6 years working on the live action One Piece have been a life changing journey. A dream come true,” he wrote. “It’s also been A LOT. So I’m stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health.”

He continued: “Thank you so much to Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and the entire cast and crew for your trust, partnership, and hard work.

“For now I’m gonna take a breath, do some therapy, try and rank up in Marvel Rivals, and come back refreshed for the new adventures that await. Thanks to everyone who has supported me. See you real soon!”

The first series of the One Piece live action remake arrived on Netflix in 2023, with a second series beginning filming in July last year.

One Piece follows the Straw Hat Pirates on their adventures to find the mythical ‘One Piece’ treasure, with the show’s first season becoming a big streaming hit when it arrived on Netflix.

Season two is set to add some new names to its cast, with Joe Manganiello, Lera Abova and Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran already announced as newcomers.

Meanwhile, the original anime series has released over 1,100 episodes, with a remake currently in production.
