Outlander star Sophie Skelton has opened up on how the pandemic has affected the new season, set to debut on March 6.

In an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, the Brianna actress explained how production for the upcoming sixth instalment was cut short and that meant the story had to be adjusted accordingly.

For Skelton, the storylines feel more “isolated” this season, with the new scenes only featuring two or three characters at a time.

“You just get this more intimate dialogue and these more gentle moments between the family which we don’t always get the time to do in Outlander because [it usually features] magnificently large scenes,” Skelton said.

As for Brianna and Roger’s (Richard Rankin) relationship, Skelton reflected on how their dynamic will change in this upcoming chapter.

“Roger and Brianna have been through a lot of trauma individually in the seasons before, whereas in this season they really go through things together as a team,” the actress said.

The new season will draw from the events of the sixth book in the novel series by Diana Gabaldon. However, due to the new TV instalment having a shorter episode run, the sixth book might carry on into the seventh season.

“This was originally a twelve-episode season and we had to cut it short very last minute to an eight-episode season,” Skelton confirmed. “Especially for a lot of Roger and Breanna’s storyline that was just about to take off, that will overspill into season seven.”

The actress also said that this approach to the source material makes it “exciting” for fans who have read the novels as well as those who haven’t.

“I don’t wanna give too much in terms of what’s gonna be from which book, but I do think there definitely will be a little bit of a mix and match over these two seasons.”

Outlander is due to return for season 6 on March 6. It airs on Starz in the US and streams on STARZPLAY in the UK.
