Outlander is currently in the middle of its seventh season, with the second half set to air later this year, but filming is already underway on the eighth and final season

Richard Rankin, who plays Roger Mackenzie, has spilled the beans on the heart-wrenching ending of the beloved time-travelling series Outlander.

Although there’s still some time before Outlander concludes, Richard warns fans to have their hankies at the ready for the show’s final chapter.

Currently on a break, which fans affectionately call ‘Droughtlander’, the Starz hit will resume with the latter part of its seventh season on November 22.

The narrative will continue with Jamie (portrayed by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) setting off for Scotland once more.

At the same time, Roger Mackenzie (played by Richard) and his spouse Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) are reeling from the abduction of their son Jemmy (Blake Johnston-Miller) by Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton).

As the latest season heads towards its climactic episodes, Richard hints that the finale of Outlander could be even more gut-wrenching.

“It was a very emotional read-through,” he confessed. “We had photos up from all the past seasons of the show.

Production for the eighth season is in full swing after being delayed due to industry strikes.

Starz is aiming for a mid-to-late 2025 release for the concluding season, promising a sentimental journey for both the cast and viewers after more than 10 years on air.

Recently, the cast has been filming at Castle Leoch, the iconic location from much of Outlander’s inaugural season.

“You can feel the nostalgia and what it meant to people,” Richard revealed in an interview with Square Mile.

“There were a lot of tears in the room that day.”

Looking ahead at the upcoming season, Richard shared: “The second half of season seven is really some of the best stuff I think we’ve shot for Outlander.

“It’s an incredible adventure for Roger, because we don’t often see him without [his wife] Brianna they’ve always been such a team.”

While the plot specifics are yet to be confirmed by the showrunners, fans know that each season typically draws upon one of Diana Gabaldon’s novels. There are 10 planned books in total within the series.

Nevertheless, the final instalment may be forced to veer slightly from Diana’s storyline in order to provide a satisfying end to the Frasers’ saga.

Thankfully, Outlander universe is not over, as a spin-off focusing on Jamie Fraser’s parents, titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is in the pipeline.
