After kicking off in January, production for Outlander’s upcoming prequel Blood of My Blood is in full swing and the series has announced a major casting bombshell.

As the show will transport fans over 30 years before the original storyline, viewers will meet the younger version of many of its characters as well as those who died before Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) met Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

This includes the beloved highlanders Rupert MacKenzie (Grant O’Rourke) and Angus Mhor (Stephen Walters).

During Outlander’s season three premiere, the two comical friends died from their injuries after fighting at the Battle of Culloden.

Although fans were heartbroken by their deaths, bosses confirmed the duo will return to screens as youngsters and be played by the real-life actor’s sons, Louis O’Rouke and Marlow Walters.

The original stars took to Instagram to share the news with fans and their reactions to their sons taking on the roles.

“To see our children playing the younger versions of us,” Stephen said, as an excited Grant continued: “We’ve been getting photos of everything, just standing backstage taking photos of them.

“Even though we’re no longer in it, in a way we are.”

Louis also remarked: “It’s great to be in Outlander.”

The spin-off will broaden the horizons of the Outlander universe and delve into the early lives of Jamie’s parents in the 18th-century Scottish Highlands.

In a separate timeline, it will also explore Claire’s parents during World War I in England.

As the show entered production, showrunner Matthew B Roberts said: “We’re thrilled to be telling the stories of these two couples.

“The origins of their relationships explore universal themes that transcend time periods, and we’re so excited for fans to discover and fall in love with these characters and their love stories the way they have with Claire and Jamie.”
