Fans of hit time travel drama Outlander have been warned they might have to wait at least another five months for season 7 of the epic time-travelling show.
Filming at the Wardpark studios in Cumbernauld began in the autumn and there has been speculation that a release date would be announced late in 2022 or early in 2023.
However, TV podcasters Matt and Jess Carter now say the Starz network’s schedule for the early part of next year is already pretty full. And previous seasons have been announced at least six months in advance.
Matt and Jess write in a new blog post: “It’s odd that we haven’t heard anything on the Sam Heughan – Caitriona Balfe show as of yet and the fact that we haven’t almost cements that we’re going to be waiting until at least early to mid-March … but quite possibly later. Given just how silent the network has been, we have to brace ourselves for the possibility of an April or May release.”
They point out that Starz already has season two of BMF (Black Mafia Family) scheduled to launch on January 6, followed by the “long awaited” revival of sitcom Party Down in February.
And on Monday, Starz announced that season 3 of Power Book II: Ghost will premiere on Friday, March 17, meaning there is a big launch already scheduled in each of the first three months of the year.
Outlander season 6 premiered on March 6, 2022 and the release date was first announced as far back as June 1, 2021. However, that followed a prolonged ‘Droughtlander’ of two years after filming and production was hit by the Covid pandemic.
In 2019, season 5 production started in April and the premiere date was announced in August before the show hit our screens in February 2020.
The previous year, Season Four’s launch date was announced in May – when it was still shooting in Scotland – and the season was premiered in November.
Season 7 is a bumper 16 episodes rather than just 12 or 13 (or even eight as there were in season 6). Many expect that it is going to be split up into two parts as Starz did with the very first season, which was also 16 episodes.
At a recent event in Madrid, fans quizzed Sam Heughan about the premiere date of Outlander season 7 and he replied: “Maaaaybe summer?”
He added: “Last season was cut short because of Covid situation but also Caitriona was pregnant so it was very difficult for her. I think it was a very dark season, probably one of our strongest recently
“But this season there’s a lot to look forward to, its an extended season, 16 episodes, we pick up where we left of but there are a lot of characters returning, a lot of storylines that are then explored, so there’s a lot to look forward to.
“And of course the Revolutionary War is also upon them so there’s so much that happens this season.”
