Outlander‘s showrunner has confirmed a cast exit ahead of the show’s final season.

Matthew B. Roberts, the show’s co-showrunner, confirmed that there’s a major change happening.

Jenny Fraser Murray will NOT be featured in the final season. The character – who was played by both Laura Donnelly and Kristin Atherton – was invited to North Carolina by Jamie in season 7. She ends up saying no. In the books by Diana Gabaldon, Jenny actually does say yes to their invite.

So, why the change from the books?

Matthew shared with TVLine, “The brief was: Nothing that doesn’t affect Jamie and Claire gets in. It’s gotta affect Jamie and Claire. All the main characters do, so they’re a part of it. But that’s the drive….But when you have 10 episodes, you have to stay literally on track.”

Basically, they need to focus all 10 episodes on Sam Heughan‘s Jamie and Caitriona Balfe‘s Claire, and sub plots will end up moving aside. “Again, with 10 episodes…there’s a lot less you can do,” he added.
