Outlander will soon be returning for its long awaited sixth season, and some comments from the show’s producers could hint at yet another return to the future for Claire Fraser.

Time-travelling healer Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) has jumped backwards and forwards in time throughout the first five seasons of Starz’ luscious romantic drama, Outlander. Although she’s now safely settled in Fraser’s Ridge in America, she may realise her advanced medical skills are needed elsewhere in the coming instalment.

The upcoming sixth season of Outlander could feature yet another return to the 20th Century for Claire Fraser.

The WWII nurse was first catapulted backwards through time to 18th Century Scotland via the mystical rocks at Craigh Na Dun.

Having married a rugged Highland soldier, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), Claire briefly returned to her own timeline to reunite with her first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies).

While she’s now well and truly settled at Fraser’s Ridge with the rest of the clan, Outlander season six could draw Claire back to the future.

Comments from executive producer Maril Davis and showrunner Matthew B Roberts indicate that Claire was starting to feel the strain of 18th Century living in season five.

Davis explained: “Claire obviously is struggling with fitting in to this society but also wanting to make it better in terms of her medical knowledge.”

Throughout season five, Claire is torn between her Hippocratic oath as a nurse and her responsibilities as a traveller from the future.

Although she’s desperate to help everyone on Fraser’s Ridge she can, she could threaten to expose her own secret if word gets around about her modern medical expertise.

Her conflict often puts her at odds with her young protégé Marsali (Lauren Lyle), who has accused Claire of witchcraft a number of times in the past.

As the American Revolution continues to boil around the Ridge, Claire may find herself inundated with too many patients to handle without resorting to more advanced techniques.

This could threaten the balance of history as we know it if the anachronistic healer doesn’t return to her own timeline.

Summing up her struggle for the series to come, showrunner Roberts asked: “How far does Claire go?”

“Do I bring science and my knowledge into this time that can affect the world as we go forward are definitely two fires that you know you’re walking between.”

Claire has already tempted the fates with her advanced treatment of illnesses such as typhoid and syphilis throughout the series so far.

As she continues to introduce contemporary medicines and treatments, as she did with penicillin in season five, her timeline tampering could quickly become out of control.

Davis and Roberts’ commentary for the series applies directly to a pivotal episode in season five, ‘Between Two Fires’.

The second chapter of last year’s thrilling fifth season draws its title from a crucial line from Diana Gabaldon’s original book series.

It refers to the Fraser clan as a whole each dealing with their own conflicts, as Jamie, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) are all caught between two worlds.

Sadly, Jamie doesn’t appear to have the ability to travel through time, so Claire may have to make an impossible decision once the sixth season of Outlander gets underway.
