Outlander will finally be returning to Starz this June with its long-awaited season seven release. Ahead of the premiere, Ian’s Steven Cree reflected on making Caitriona Balfe break character during season one.
After season six’s cliffhanger ending, fans were over the moon to learn Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) would soon make their comeback.
In June, viewers will finally see the fallout of Claire’s arrest as well as her trial in Wilmington.
Many are also eager to see the couple reunite after they were brutally separated by Richard Brown (Chris Larkin) and his men.
This was one of the many heartbreaking separations throughout the series, as fans will recall Claire’s brutal mistreatment at the hands of Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) in season one.
As a viewer noticed Caitriona could be seen laughing, Steven Cree revealed the line was in fact improvised.
After Reshma Gopaldas from the SheKnows podcast picked up on the Caitriona breaking character, Steven remarked: “That is funny, I think you can actually pick that up.”
Following a brief explanation about filming, he explained: “Laura says her last line and there’s normally always about two or three seconds where they continue to let the cameras roll before the show cut, just in case something happens.
“But probably in this case, because there’s obviously an awkward atmosphere that they want to keep.”
Steven admitted: “In this take, I randomly decided to pick that up and ask Claire if she wanted stuffed cabbage, deliberately, purely and utterly only to try and make Caitriona laugh.
“I find it so funny she says ‘no, thank you’ that always makes it even better.”
Speaking on the dish, Steven remarked: “I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of stuffed cabbage in my life, before that.”
Thankfully for fans, the characters will be back on screen soon as Lionsgate+ has revealed season seven will premiere on Tuesday, June 16 in the UK.
The instalment will be significantly longer than season six which only consisted of eight episodes.
The streaming giants have announced the eagerly awaited seasons will have an extended 16 episodes, which will be split into two parts.
Each part of season seven will contain eight episodes, with the latter half airing in 2024.
