Caitriona Balfe remembers a lot from the early days of filming Outlander, including the moment co-star Sam Heughan said she looked “old”.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander.
Caitriona Balfe hasn’t forgotten when Sam Heughan insulted her on the set of Outlander almost 10 years ago.
Outlander wouldn’t be the same without the undeniable chemistry between Jamie and Claire Fraser, brought to life by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe respectively.
Since 2014, they have been at the heart of the Starz drama, based on the bestselling novel series by author Diana Gabaldon.
As well as playing lovers on the small screen, Balfe and Heughan are great friends in real life, having formed a real connection while working so closely together on the show.
There may have been some tension in the beginning though when Heughan told Balfe what he really thought prior to meeting her.
Speaking on the podcast She Knows, the Outlander stars were asked what their first impressions were of each other on film.
Straight away, Balfe stepped in to answer the question, bringing up a moment that Heughan would probably prefer to forget.
She said: “I know exactly what his first impression of me was on film, because he came and was like ‘wow you look like older on screen’.
“Did I say that?” Heughan queried, to which Balfe stated: “Yeah I remember exactly where we were, we were in the field behind Castleton.”
Heughan attempted to explain himself: “I was probably trying to pay a compliment and it came out -” with Balfe sarcastically interrupting: “No, really, really.”
He then joked: “It was like you’re very beautiful in real life but on screen you look really old.”
Nevertheless, the Scot’s insult didn’t deter the actress from sharing her real feelings on working with him in the early days.
“I just remember, well, everything with Sam in that beginning.
“First of all, we had such an ease with each other but you’re just so magnetic on screen.”
Of course, Heughan couldn’t help but continue to joke with Balfe, replying: “What do you want? “Are you trying to butter me up so I behave?”
Unfortunately, it is the beginning of the end for the stars working together as season eight will be the drama’s final outing.
There is still the second part of season seven to look forward to though, which is expected to make its debut sometime in early 2024.
