Sam Heughan has a long and varied career behind him, with a number of credits to his name. Best known as Jamie Fraser in Outlander, Heughan has also appeared in the likes of Love Again, Suspect and, of course, River City.
But it appears not everything on his CV fills him with pride. One of his first film forays was as the titular role in Young Alexander the Great, which was released in 2010.
It focussed on the teenage days of the famous Macedonian general under the tutelage of Aristotle but was never put out on wide release. And the trailer may give a clue why – hammy acting and cringeworthy swordplay suggests its best bet might have been as a cult B-Movie.
And it seems Heughan himself has a little squirm when looking back on the movie. During a recent interview, it was noted Young Alexander the Great had been rebranded as Born to be Great on IMDb with a future re-release date suggested.
Heughan admitted it was “news to me” before saying he had almost “died” while filming the swords-and-sandals epic which had a budget of just £6 million. Telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he might have “one or two” questions for his team, he joked: “It might be one of those things that one day, hopefully, will never surface.”
And he went on: “Look. It was something I did many years ago. It was a low budget thing, I made some of the best friends on it.
“I almost died on that set a couple of times. It was quite an experience. I almost fell out of a taxi door. I had to jump off a cliff.
“They went on a runaway horse. And my favourite moment was riding a taxicab around Cairo sitting on the roof pretending to be on a horse.”
Despite Heughan’s memories, the film has a not-awful 5.6 out of 10 average score on IMDb from 390 reviews. The movie also stars Lauren Cohan who has gone on to appear in The Walking Dead, Supernatural and the Vampire Diaries.
Paisley-born Paul Telfer went on to star in NBC’s iconic soap opera Days of Our Lives while Amy Shiels has appeared in Veronica Guerin, Slaughter, Twin Peaks, and Final Fantasy XV. Heughan is currently on the big screen alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Celine Dion while next month he will return as Jamie Fraser in the penultimate season of Outlander.
