Outlander is known for its hard-hitting, emotional storylines as viewers follow Jamie and Claire Fraser’s relationship across different centuries.

Ahead of Outlander season six, Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan has reflected on his time on the Starz so far. Going back to the first run of episodes, Sam detailed which instalment was the hardest not only for him to film but also the crew filming. Jamie had already been through the wringer before meeting time travelling doctor Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) and was a wanted man in Scotland. However, there was so much more torture in store for him.

In the first series of Outlander, Claire repeatedly refused the advances of Captain Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) who was fighting for the British.

Captain Jack and his men were searching for Red Jamie, who they believed was causing trouble in Scotland and was a potential threat the monarchy.

When Captain Jack learned Claire was married to Jamie, he made it his mission to ruin their lives and torture the pair.

He succeeded when he captured Claire and Jamie risked his life to save his new wife, even trading places with her to ensure her safety.

Captain Jack was more than happy to make the switch as he was obsessed with Jamie.

The military man went on to rape and torture Jamie to the point where he wanted to die.

Claire and Jamie’s men eventually broke into the prison and rescued him but he faced a long recovery journey.

Looking back on filming those scenes, Sam explained how tough it was for both himself and the crew.

“Episode 16 is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever filmed,” he said in the Outlander Forever Collector’s Issue.

“Jamie’s torture was extreme and really draining to film for cast and crew, not only for the viewer to watch.”

Eventually Jamie went on to get payback as he faced Captain Jack on the battlefield at Culloden with the soldier killed.

At the opposite end of the spectrum however, Sam said he loved episode nine from season four, The Birds and The Bees

The episode sees Jamie come face to face with his daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) after believing they’d never meet.

Brianna travelled back in time to warn her parents they were in danger and would die in a fire.

She never expected to see Jame, who she’d only recently learned was her biological father.

“Jamie and Brianna finally meeting was such an iconic moment, and Sophie is so fun to work with,” Sam said.

“We laughed a lot while hunting bees and this episode is where we see father and daughter really bond.”

Sam will be back on screens soon as Jamie Fraser with season six airing at the start of March.

Fans have been given the chance to join the virtual screening on February 24 when the world premiere takes place.

Outlander season six airs on Starz in the US and on StarzPlay in the UK on March 6.
