Outlander star Sam Heughan has opened up about his preparation for new swingers series The Couple Next Door.
The actor plays the role of Danny, one half of a couple who are neighbours to new local arrivals Pete (Alfred Enoch) and Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson).
Pete and Evie realise their new upscale neighbourhood is not all as it seems as they enter an open relationship with traffic cop Danny and his wife Becka (Jessica De Gouw).
Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a recent Q&A, Heughan was asked about his extensive preparation for his role, joking that he had “multiple open relationships”.
On a more serious note, he then explained that he researched the lives of traffic cops in order to learn more about his character.
“On the surface, it’s quite regulated but these guys do operate quite independently and they are at the forefront of any traumatic situation,” he said.
“So I did spend a lot of time with a traffic cop up in Scotland and to me the most interesting questions were, what is the effect on your family, on your own mental health and it was really interesting to find that out.
“What a difficult job it is and on the surface can look like the knight in shining armour, but they have to make very, very quick decisions a lot of the time.”
Heughan went on to reveal that Danny’s job “doesn’t define who he is”, though he found it “an interesting aspect” to discover.
“I’m a keen motorcyclist and that was one of the things, donning the outfit,” the star continued. “I would say I could ride. There were other actors who were actually better than me after less experience, but it was a really fun part of that.”
Elsewhere in the chat, the actor opened up about crafting The Couple Next Door’s sex scenes, saying their intimacy co-ordinator “made it an incredibly safe space for everybody to be able to express what they wanted and what the scene needed to be”.
The Couple Next Door begins on November 27 on Channel 4, and will air on Starz in the US.
