Fresh images of Peaky Blinders’ Sophie Rundle in her new drama The Diplomat have been released, promising a tense European thriller.
Set in Barcelona, the six-episode Alibi series created by Ben Richards (Showtrial, Cobra, The Tunnel) sees the Gentleman Jack star in the role of Laura Simmonds, fighting to protect distressed British nationals in the popular Spanish destination.
Laura works alongside colleague and friend Alba Ortiz (Serena Manteghi), with this dynamic duo mixing the roles of lawyer, counsellor and cop to navigate a stream of surprising and complex cases.
The Diplomat kicks off with the suspicious death of young British barman Jay Sutherland, working on an exclusive yacht in the city’s marina. While the Spanish police think it has been a tragic accident, Laura is convinced something is off, as is Jay’s father Colin (Killing Eve’s Danny Sapani).
When new evidence emerges, Jay’s case is treated as a murder, prompting Laura to investigate to deliver justice. The diplomat soon realises she’s up against a much bigger system than anticipated, one that’s working hard to cover what really happened on that fateful night.
Alongside Rundle, Manteghi and Sapani, The Diplomat also stars Dylan Brady, Laia Costa, Steven Cree, Isak FĂ©rriz, Bert Seymour and Philipp Boos.
Earlier this year, Rundle’s queer period drama Gentleman Jack was given the axe prematurely.
Rundle starred as Ann Walker opposite Vigil’s Suranne Jones in the role of Anne Lister, whose diaries were the inspiration for the series.
After the cancellation, Rundle took to her Instagram to share her thoughts, writing: “What a privilege it has been to play Ann Walker and bring her and Anne Lister’s extraordinary love story back to life. I am so proud to have been a part of reclaiming their place in history.”
The Diplomat is set to air on Alibi in early 2023, though an official release date hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.
