Production on Alan Ritchson’s new Netflix movie War Machine is officially under way.

According to Variety, the upcoming action sci-fi film has begun production in Victoria, Australia, and is set to continue through until December.

Directed by Patrick Hughes, War Machine will follow a team of Army Rangers who “encounter a threat beyond their imagination” during the final day of “the world’s toughest selection process”.

Ritchson, known for his role as the titular character in Prime Video’s hit series Reacher, will reportedly star as the lead Ranger candidate.

Meanwhile, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Blake Richardson, Keiynan Lonsdale and Daniel Webber are set to play other aspiring Rangers who are “way over their heads”.

Rounding out the ensemble are Dennis Quaid and Esai Morales, who will both play commanding officers.

As well as directing the film, Hughes wrote the script alongside James Beaufort, who joined the cast of Neighbours earlier this year in the role of Felix Rodwell.

A release date for War Machine is yet to be confirmed.

Elsewhere, Ritchson recently wrapped filming on Potsy Ponciroli’s upcoming action film Motor City, which will see him play a man who seeks brutal revenge on those who framed him after he is released from prison.

The actor’s co-star Ben Foster recently revealed that the movie will be “virtually silent”, telling Collider: “The film itself, Motor City — we just wrapped — is virtually a silent film. There are five lines of dialogue.

“Jack White is helping with the music, so it’s like a rock-disco revenge film. It’s like a graphic novel, so it’ll be interesting to see how that shakes out.”

Ritchson will also return for a third season of Reacher, though there’s no word yet on a release date.
