Buckle up, because Rick and Morty just dropped a live-action trailer starring Christopher Lloyd as the genius scientist.
In a short clip posted by adult swim on Twitter on Friday (September 3), Lloyd perfectly channels Rick Sanchez — glorious belches included. The animated portal-hopping scientist voiced by co-creator Justin Roiland is inspired by Lloyd’s character Doc from the beloved trilogy Back to the Future.
In this live-action version, Knives Out and It actor Jaeden Martell plays Rick’s shy, softly-spoken grandson Morty, reluctantly following his grandpa on his space adventures.
The two actors are seen hopping out of a portal in a real-life replica of Rick’s garage. What does this mean for fans of the provocative sci-fi animated series? We’re not sure yet.
Adult swim called the short live-action video the Rick and Morty from the C-132 universe, but it isn’t clear whether Lloyd and Martell will somehow feature in the show’s fifth season, which is yet to air its two final episodes.
After all, Lloyd has always been interested in taking part in Rick and Morty in some capacity.
“I don’t follow it closely, but I’ve seen a few episodes and I gotta tell you, I think it’s a lot of fun. I know it’s some kind of parody of Doc and Marty,” the actor told Phoenix New Times back in 2018.
“I’d like to, of course. I think it’s really fun,” he said when asked if he’d like to join the show.
Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim in the US, and on E4 and All 4 in the UK.
