Riverdaele will come back next year in January for season 5 of The CW teen drama. But could there be a new romance?
Riverdale is going to be thrown seven years into the future when it does return for series five after catching up on a few key episodes which weren’t finished in time for season four. The Netflix drama had to end filming earlier than planned because of the pandemic which meant the latest season wasn’t completed. So the Core Four’s final days at Riverdale High will instead make up the beginning of series five.
Will Jughead Jones and Veronica Lodge get together after time jump?
Riverdale is yet to air the scenes from the teens’ graduation and prom where there is bound to be plenty of drama.
In season four, Betty Cooper (played by Lili Reinhart) and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) had a secret kiss behind their other halves’ backs.
When fans last saw Riverdale, this secret hadn’t been uncovered so the truth is likely to come out in season five.
So the pair’s futures with Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) aren’t looking good.
Speaking on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Reinhart revealed there would be a time jump in the next season.
She said: “Season five, we’re actually doing a, I believe, seven year time jump into the future. So we’re not going to be teenagers anymore…I’m psyched about it. I’m really psyched about it.
“I think it will be nice to play an adult. But I also really appreciate that Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa], our showrunner, was like: ‘Yeah, let’s, like, revamp.’
“We’re not just stuck in high school for seven seasons.”
But following Betty and Archie’s betrayal, could it lead the way to Jughead and Ronnie falling for one another instead?
Taking to Reddit, one fan said: “After the timeskip, I’m guessing nobody has stayed in touch so they kinda get to know each other all over again and maybe this time Jughead and Ronnie take the time to know each other better.”
While another commented: “Jeronica [Jughead and Veronica] would look really good together, I think. I’d like to see it.”
So could there be a chance of Jughead and Veronica building on their childhood friendship to form a relationship as adults?
Even if they do get together, it won’t be straight away as both of them will start off in relationships.
Earlier this year, a casting call revealed Jughead is going to be romantically involved with a woman called Jessica when the series returns.
Their relationship won’t be a happy one though as the description says: “Jessica makes no secret of the fact that she’s done with their relationship since she can see that she’s not as important to him as the book he’s not writing.”
Elsewhere, Veronica will be married to someone called Chad Gekko following the time jump.
But from the sounds of it, Chad will resemble Veronica’s father Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos).
The description for Chad reads: “Chad is Veronica’s controlling and neurotic husband who works on Wall Street.
“Though charming, his failed Ponzi scheme and shady deals with Hiram reveal his moral duplicity, putting Chad’s life in danger.”
So could Jughead and Veronica’s string of unsuccessful relationships bring the pair closer together?
