Spring Breakers, the 2012 cult crime drama starring Selena Gomez, is getting an unexpected sequel.

Described by the Huffington Post as “Scarface meets Britney Spears”, the film cast Gomez and fellow Disney Channel star Vanessa Hudgens, as well as Pretty Little Liars actor Ashley Benson as college girls who descend into a world of sex, drugs and armed robberies.

With a focus on trippy visuals and shock value, the film became an early hit for studio A24. Now, over a decade later, it’s getting a follow-up from the same producers.

Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain will be directed by Matthew Bright rather than Harmony Korine, who helmed the original, Variety reports.

The new film will have a new set of rebellious girls who head out on a spring break trip that spirals out of control, with fellow former Disney Channel stars Bella Thorne and Ariel Martin leading the cast.

They will be joined by Stranger Things’ Grace Van Dien and Godfather of Harlem’s True Whitaker (Forest Whitaker’s daughter).

“We’re thrilled to be working with Christian and Capture on Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain and excited to keep exploring bold, new, disruptive stories around that wild, fever-dream of youth,” producers Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner said.

“The desire for Spring Break to go on forever is something we’ve never let go of,” they added.

Attempts to create a sequel have stalled over the years, with the initial plan to create a film about young hedonists clashing with religious extremists, and a later aborted attempt to create a digital series.
