Squid Game has teased the deadly new challenges to come in the first trailer for its third and final season.

The final chapter of the hit Netflix series is due to debut next month, and will see Gi-hun return to the deadly games after his failed rebellion in the season two finale, which led to the death of his friend Jung-bae by The Front Man.

The new trailer opens with the guards ominously carrying Gi-hun back to the players’ quarters in a coffin, before teasing a new game for him and his fellow survivors.

The players are presented with a giant gumball machine that dispenses either red or blue balls, likely determining their fates for the next challenge.

After teasing some more tense scenes, the screen fades to black as we hear a baby’s cry, suggesting that Player 222 has given birth.

The official synopsis for season three reads: “The third and final season of Squid Game follows Gi-hun after losing his best friend in the game and being driven to utter despair by The Front Man, who was hiding his true identity to infiltrate the game.

“Gi-hun persists with his goal to put an end to the game, while The Front Man continues onto his next move and the surviving players’ choices will lead to graver consequences with each round.”

The third instalment will air off the back of the record-breaking success of season two, which topped Netflix’s most-viewed TV show charts in 92 countries.

On 31 December, Netflix announced that season two had already achieved 68 million views, becoming the platform’s seventh-biggest non-English language show, with the most views ever for a show in its first week.

The series went on to set another record by racking up 126.2 million views in its first 11 days, surpassing any other Netflix series in terms of views within such a short period.
