The Korean series debuted on the streaming service back in 2021, becoming an instant hit with viewers and later being renewed for a second season, which arrives on Netflix this December.
According to Deadline, acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher is currently in talks to develop an English-language version of the show for Netflix, though no further details have been confirmed at this moment in time.
While this would mark Squid Game’s first scripted spin-off, a reality spin-off series titled Squid Game: The Challenge was released last year and has also been renewed for a second season.
The series follows 456 contestants as they compete in a variety of games from the main show to become the ultimate victor and secure a $4.56 million cash prize.
Netflix also announced a spin-off game titled Squid Game: Unleashed last December, which will be available to play through Netflix Games.
Meanwhile, Netflix recently released a trailer teasing some violent new challenges for Squid Game’s second season, which will follow season one winner Seong Gi-hun as he re-enters the deadly game.
A third season of the show is also happening, which has been confirmed to be the final season.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained: “Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either.
“The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with season three, which will be brought to you next year.”
