Squid Game star Hoyeon has signed up to star alongside the likes of Cate Blanchett and Sacha Baron Cohen in new Apple TV+ series Disclaimer.
The actress broke out last year in Netflix’s wildly successful thriller as Kang Sae-byeok, and has since made a big move towards Hollywood career-wise.
Excitingly, she’s now bagged her first major role in the new TV series, which follows a successful TV journalist called Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) who has built a career on exposing the transgression of long-respected institutions.
However, when an intriguing novel written by a widower pops up on her bedside, Ravenscroft discovers she is the key character in a story she thought was long buried and that reveals her “darkest secret”.
Hoyeon will take on the role Kim, described as an ambitious and hard-working woman who sees working for Ravenscroft as her big break.
Disclaimer also stars Beauty and the Beast’s Kevin Kline and The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee, and comes from Roma and Harry Potter director Alfonso Cuarón.
Hoyeon is unlikely to return to Squid Game for season 2 given her character’s fate in the first season, and it looks like the Netflix show’s second outing may be a while off yet, with creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently admitting that the script isn’t written.
“It’s here. Not on the page, it’s here,” he told Variety as he pointed at his head. “Everything is secret. I cannot tell anything.”
However, he teased of Lee Jung-jae’s character Seong Gi-hun, who ended up winning the Squid Game at the end of the first season: “But he will come back and do something for the world.”
