Stranger Things actor Gaten Matarazzo reveals fans can expect more “mature” and “ambitious” content when the show comes back to Netflix for Season 4.

“I think we kind of have to,” Matarazzo told Entertainment Tonight about stepping things up for the new season. “I think what the goal for the boys, for [show creators Matt and Ross Duffer], to do is to make sure that the bar is raised every single season, but it’s raised not too much to a point at which we couldn’t be able to exceed or match what we’ve done prior.”

The actor, who portrays Dustin Henderson on the series, went on to describe series creators Matt and Ross Duffer as “ambitious” and “hungry” when it comes to taking each season to the next level. “They know what their show is, they know what people like about it. They know what they want and they’re going to get it too. That’s what a day working with them is like, it really is incredible.”

Matarazzo further detailed the tone of Season 4, explaining, “It’s definitely, I think the tone is definitely matured for sure, and I think they do that on purpose because I think they want their show to mature with their kids. As we are growing older as people, we have to grow older as characters. They’re confronted by this issue, but they embrace it, and they use it to their advantage. And they don’t freak out when we get taller or when our voices drop or anything like that.” He added, “They use it and they use it as ammunition for their writing. It’s incredible what they can do. Working with them, it’s just exceptional. Always has been.”

While few plot details have been revealed about the upcoming season, Matarazzo said back in January that Season 4 is “the scariest [season] out of the previous three, which I love because it’s very fun to film.” Fans will recall that Season 3 of Stranger Things ended on a cliffhanger when Jim Hopper (David Harbour) appeared to sacrifice himself in order to close a gate to the Upside Down.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Priah Ferguson, Cary Elwes, Jake Busey, Maya Thurman-Hawke and Levon Thurman-Hawke. Season 4 has yet to receive a release date.
