The potential revival of Supernatural has fans speculating wildly, with many wondering who the Winchester brothers might face next. While the return of the series—possibly as a Season 16 continuation—remains uncertain, no concrete plans have been announced by creator Eric Kripke or stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in recent appearances. Still, the buzz around a revival refuses to die down, as viewers continue to theorize about returning characters and unresolved storylines.

Although Supernatural concluded definitively with the deaths of Sam and Dean Winchester, death in this universe has rarely been final. Past seasons have shown that not even the afterlife can hold back the Winchesters—or their enemies. With this in mind, a revival would offer the perfect opportunity to revisit villains who never reached their full potential. Among them, one adversary from Season 13 stands out as an ideal choice: the Shedim.

Season 13 Introduced the Shedim—Then Forgot About Them
First appearing in Season 13, Episode 2, the Shedim were teased as some of the most dangerous entities in all of Supernatural. Introduced by Asmodeus (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), the Shedim were described as Hell’s worst denizens—so dangerous, in fact, that God himself sealed them away in a part of Hell that was meant to be inaccessible forever. Lucifer had once attempted to use them but quickly reversed course when he realized their power, locking them away again out of fear.

Asmodeus, seizing control of Hell after Crowley’s (Mark Sheppard) death, saw potential in the Shedim. He manipulated Jack (Alexander Calvert), disguising himself to deceive the Nephilim into thinking the Shedim were misunderstood soldiers of God. Jack came dangerously close to freeing them, but Sam and Dean intervened just in time. The Shedim were sealed away once more, never to be mentioned again. Despite their terrifying setup, they were left behind as one of the show’s most glaring missed opportunities.

Why the Shedim Are Perfect for Supernatural Season 16
Bringing back the Shedim in a possible Supernatural Season 16 could be a brilliant way to tie up loose ends. With God dethroned and Jack assuming divine responsibilities by the series’ end, the ancient binding that kept the Shedim locked away could be weakened—or entirely broken. This opens the door for these creatures to escape Hell, perhaps venturing into the afterlife or even back to the mortal realm.

This scenario would create a compelling new conflict for Sam and Dean. A hunt through the realms beyond Earth to contain the Shedim would be a fresh, high-stakes narrative direction. It would also retroactively justify their ominous introduction in Season 13, transforming an abandoned plot point into a vital story arc.

A Missed Opportunity That Still Holds Promise
Out of all the unresolved arcs in Supernatural, the Shedim storyline remains one of the most frustrating due to its enormous untapped potential. Their fearsome reputation, hinted at in just one episode, offered a chance for the show to introduce a unique and formidable challenge. At a time in Season 13 when the narrative stakes felt low, the Shedim could have elevated tension and introduced a sense of real danger for the Winchesters.

Moreover, their reemergence could drive character development—particularly for Jack. As the one who nearly unleashed them, Jack might face guilt and a crisis of trust, exploring the emotional consequences of his actions. This layered character arc was never fully explored before the series wrapped, but a revival could finally give it the depth it deserves.

Bringing the Shedim back wouldn’t just satisfy long-time fans; it would fill in a major narrative gap left by the original series. With the right story, Supernatural Season 16 could reclaim this abandoned thread and turn it into one of the most compelling comebacks in the franchise’s history.
