The Big Bang Theory star Laurie Metcalf has joined the third season of Netflix’s true crime anthology show Monster.
The actor, also known for her roles in The Conners and Lady Bird, is among the new names announced for the next season – which will focus on the crimes of serial killer Ed Gein (played by Charlie Hunnam).
Metcalf will portray Gein’s mother, while The White Lotus’ Tom Hollander has been cast as Hollywood director Alfred Hitchcock and The Crown’s Olivia Williams will play his wife Alma.
Gein was known as the ‘Butcher of Plainfield’, gaining notoriety in the late 1950s when it was discovered he had exhumed bodies from his local graveyard in Plainfield, Wisconsin, and investigators found human remains in his property.
He confessed to killing Mary Hogan in 1954 and Bernice Worden in 1957, and he was suspected of murdering more. Gein was tried for Worden’s murder in 1968 after being initially ruled unfit to stand trial.
Hitchcock likely comes into the narrative as the serial killer reportedly served as inspiration for the character of Norman Bates in Psycho, as well as a number of other horror characters on film.
Monster debuted in 2022. The first season focused on the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who murdered 17 boys and men between the late ’70s and early ’90s.
It was swiftly renewed for two further seasons that would tell “stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society”.
The second was released last month and follows the story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez – who were found guilty in 1996 of the first-degree murder of their parents, José and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menéndez.
