MAJOR spoilers follow for The Last of Us season 2, episode 7.
The Last of Us co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have broken down the season two finale after that cliffhanger.
Airing in the US yesterday and in the UK today, the final episode of season two ended on a dramatic and tragic note.
After Ellie (Bella Ramsey) found and killed two members of Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) WLF gang, Ellie seemingly resigned herself to leaving Seattle and her vendetta behind.
In a final showdown in the theatre, Ellie and Jesse (Young Mazino) found Abby in the lobby, where she was holding a gun to Tommy’s (Gabriel Luna) head.
Abby shot Jesse in the head before pointing the gun at Ellie, who begged her not to kill anyone else. The screen cut to black as another gunshot could be heard.
Asked what it means for Ellie and Dina now that Jesse, the father of Dina’s unborn baby, is dead, Druckmann told Deadline: “I mean, how could it not have a drastic impact, especially when he’s the father of this baby, but also a very close friend, a former romantic partner?”
The final scene of the episode sees Abby wake up as the words “Seattle Day 1” flash on the screen, suggesting that the Seattle story is about to be retold from Abby’s perspective.
Mazin said of the episode ending: “What I want the audience to feel thematically at the end of the season is that they aren’t where they were, but they’re not yet where they are going to go.
“That there has always been a story that we’ve been telling about the good and bad of love, but we switch which side is good and bad sometimes.”
Describing Ellie and Abby’s storyline, Mazin said that the pair are in “moral trouble” and that Ellie is now “faced with the consequences of the things she’s done”.
“We don’t know where these two are going to end, but what I would hope the audience feels is that they are not done,” Mazin said. “They are not done growing, or they are not done falling. We’ll have to wait and see which it is.”
