The Devil Made Me Do It from 2021 was the latest film in The Conjuring universe, and it has been two years since then. However, later this year, The Nun 2, a follow-up to the spinoff hit from 2018, will put an end to this dry spell. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Corin Hardy’s The Nun was a HUGE box office success, grossing an astounding $365 million in theaters.

The Nun actually has the highest box office performance in the whole Conjuring franchise to date, and that includes the two main James Wan-directed Conjuring movies!

It only made sense that Valak, the demonic nun, would make a comeback in a sequel, and The Nun 2 is currently set to hit theaters on September 8, 2023. Thus, it has been five years since Valak’s first solo film, which was a box-office success. Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Curse of La Llorona) will serve as the film’s director this time.

The Cast
Star of American Horror Story Taissa Farmiga is coming back as Sister Irene. Jonas Bloquet, who plays Maurice “Frenchie” Theriault, will be working with her. But it doesn’t seem like Father Burke will be played again by Demián Bichir.

Naturally, Bonnie Aarons will reprise her role as Valak because The Nun wouldn’t exist without its terrifying title character.

Storm Reid, who starred in Euphoria and The Suicide Squad, is taking on a lead role in the follow-up, but it’s not yet known what she’ll be playing. Along with them, Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose Downey play the roles of Kate, a teacher, and Sophie, her daughter.

Behind the backstage, Director Michael Chaves of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is in charge of the project. The script was written by Akela Cooper, with revisions by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing.

Given that Cooper is the author of M3GAN and Malignant, you should be anticipating the sequel when you hear her name.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga made cameos as Ed and Lorraine Warren at the final moment of The Nun. Frenchie was the character we saw being exorcised in the very first Conjuring movie, so it was old footage from that film.

Could the Warrens make more of an appearance in the follow-up? The sequel could confirm (or refute) the long-standing fan theory that Sister Irene is a younger version of Lorraine.

The Nun 2: The Plot
The main character of the first movie is Sister Irene who goes on a journey with a priest named Father Burke to look into the suicide of a nun in a monastery in Romania. They quickly learn that a demonic entity known as Valak is haunting the abbey and taking possession of the bodies of those who reside there. Valak had not been beaten back by the time the movie ended, setting up a new conflict in the follow-up.

The casting announcements have provided audiences with a general sense of what to expect, even though specifics are still a secret. The sequel shifts the location from Romania to France in 1956, 4 years after the initial movie. There, a priest is killed, and Sister Irene once more interacts with Valak. Although there isn’t much information here, it does hint at a new conflict between Irene and Valak as well as a struggle between good and evil.

Moreover, as they reach the story, the filmmakers’ biggest challenge will be integrating it into the main Conjuring timeframe. What transpires to Valak between The Nun 2 and The Conjuring 2 when it meets the Warrens?

The release date for The Nun 2: When can we anticipate The Nun 2?
The Nun 2 will hit theaters on September 8, 2023, 5 years after the initial film debuted in September 2018.

Although The Nun 2 has been in production since October 2022, it is unclear if it will be finished by January 2023. If the sequel had a similar production schedule to the first film, hopefully, it has already been finished.
