The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page has shared the news that she and her wife Emma Portner are divorcing after three years of marriage.

The pair have released a shared statement confirming their split, which reads: “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer. We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”

Oscar-nominated actor Page and dancer Portner married in early 2018.

Page, who has starred in movies including Juno, Inception and the X-Men series, announced in December that he is transgender and uses the pronouns he/they.

“I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here,” he wrote in a statement on Instagram. “To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.”

He added that it feels “remarkable” to “finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self”, thanking “so many in the trans community” for their “courage” and “generosity”.

“I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive,” he said, promising that he will “do everything I can to change this world for the better”.

In Netflix’s sci-fi comedy series The Umbrella Academy, Page stars as the super-powerful Vanya Hargreeves / Number Seven, a talented violinist whose powers had been suppressed for years.

The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for a third season, with the Hargreeves siblings set to confront the mysterious Sparrow Academy after their messy trip through time.
