Season three of Netflix’s hit sci-fi show The Umbrella Academy sneakily changed the appearance of Justin H Min’s Ben Hargreeves.
The season premiere kicked off with the same scene that featured at the end of season two’s finale. And while fans may not have noticed it at first, Ben’s hairstyle is drastically changed in the season three opener, despite it being a direct continuation of the previous season.
Moving away from the asymmetrical bangs that draped over his face in the first two seasons, Ben now sports a more modern, spiky-haired do.
While this may be an irksome continuity error to some, Min explained how overjoyed he was with the change in season three in an interview with TV Line.
“You know, they talk about the happiest day in your life. The bangs had a great run, but they had to go. They kept falling out,” Min said of the hairpiece he wore to don the bangs.
“It was going to be a nightmare to film with that, so the hair went up, and we called it a day.”
Min shaved his head over lockdown, so the hairpiece would have been even more impractical to wear while shooting season three. Min can thank series creator Steve Blackman for the change, as the showrunner hated the look.
“We shot that [original] scene on the very last day of season 2, and I did not want them to do that to his hair,” Blackman said. “It’s supposed to be continuous [into season 3], but… I wanted to change it. So did Justin, so we did a little flip of that.”
Season three premiered on June 22, and while the show hasn’t been officially renewed by Netflix for a fourth season, it seems likely that it will be.
Meanwhile, Min will next be seen in Netflix’s comedy-drama TV show Beef alongside Steven Yeun, while he also starred in the much-lauded A24 movie After Yang, which was released earlier this year.
The Umbrella Academy seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix.
