The Witcher season 3 spoilers follow.

The Witcher star MyAnna Buring has opened up about her character Tissaia de Vries’s “heartbreaking” fate in season 3.

The latest episodes of the Netflix fantasy series saw Tissaia betrayed by Vilgefortz of Roggeveen, and, utterly broken, she decides to take her own life.

Speaking to Digital Spy about whether the betrayal was something Tissaia could have come back from, Buring explained: “I think she feels directly responsible for the death of all these incredible mages and humans.

“She feels directly responsible for making choices that led to this war, to this horrific fallout.

“I think her lack of judgement… when it comes to Vilgefortz, it’s something that smacks her in the face. And at the end of the day, I don’t think she can see a universe where it’s better with her, you know?

“I know, it’s really sad. But I think, you know, what a horrific place to sort of be in. But ultimately, when you see that level of destruction, and you feel that you could have avoided it with better choices, I think it’s that sad, actually.”

Buring added: “I think it’s really heartbreaking as well, because Vilgefortz is somebody that she put so much hope into, and she felt that, together, they could actually change and create this balance within how all these kingdoms will run, and they can finally achieve a certain kind of peace where chaos was respected. But sadly, you know…”

Asked whether there was any truth to Vilgefortz’s feelings, Buring explained: “I mean, we love each other in real life, so yes. Well, I think Vilgefortz was just playing a game the whole time, and just played it really well.

“He just enjoys playing the game so well,” she added, suggesting Vilgefortz is a “sort of sociopath here”.

Therica Wilson-Read, who plays Sabrina Glevissig, suggested that “he does respect” Tissaia and “respects her power”, though also noted it is an “utter betrayal”.

“It’s a crumb of contempt for her that sort of lies there,” Buring suggested. “You know, it’s like when you have horrible crumbs in your bed, and you can’t sleep. He’s like that. He’s like one of those. Crumbs of contempt.”
