Despite seemingly being blown into a million pieces at the end of Stranger Things season 3, we still don’t know if David Harbour’s Chief Hopper is dead or not.

While his demise was very much implied and mourned over, we never actually saw him die on-screen, which is often one of the main requisites for someone making a miraculous return.

Stoking the fire of speculation even further, the season’s post-credits scene gave fans hope that Hopper may have survived, after some Russian guards made reference to “the American”, who was locked in a cell.

Now, the Harbour himself has teased the fate of his character without actually giving too much away.

Hosting this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, the actor decided to take his opening monologue backstage, which had be fully transformed into the Upside Down, complete with cobwebs and a fancy dress Demogorgon.

Inside, he stumbled upon comedian and The Suicide Squad star Pete Davidson, who promptly asked him: “Didn’t you like die in here at the end of the show? Are you dead or…?”

Playfully stumbling over his words as he tried to the avoid the question, he replied: “Er… no. I mean, I’m not exactly authorised…. Just watch the show. You’ll find out next season.”
