The producers of The Big Bang Theory have revealed how they were “astonished” by Jim Parsons’ interpretation of the character Sheldon Cooper.

The sitcom ran for 12 seasons and ended earlier this year, with Parsons particularly memorable as the socially awkward, bazinga-quoting, Texas-born genius Sheldon.

And, in a special featurette on the show’s complete boxset, The Big Bang Theory executive producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady revealed that following his audition, they were immediately sure Parsons was the right man for the job.

Even if he did craft the character in a way they “never anticipated”.

“He was astonishing,” Lorre said.

“I didn’t even believe it when that happened. I never anticipated the character being the way he crafted it. It was funny, it was touching, it was real.”

Bill added: “Filled with inexperience and enthusiasm, I said to Chuck, ‘That’s the guy, that’s the guy!'”

Following The Big Bang Theory ending earlier this year, Amy Farrah-Fowler actress Mayim Bialik recently shared a reunion picture with her former cast mates.

And, as amazing as Jim may have been, did you spot this surprising Sheldon blunder in the show?

The Big Bang Theory‘s final season aired on CBS and CBS All Access in the US. You can pre-order the complete boxset now on DVD and Blu-ray.
