Outlander’s Sam Heughan has announced his newest project.
The actor will be publishing a memoir, called Waypoints, that will see him reflecting on “the experiences that shaped” him as he embarks on a soul-searching journey along the West Highland Way, which the Scottish actor has admitted to feeling a deep connection to.
Heughan, who plays Highlander Jamie Fraser on Starz’s Outlander, has described his autobiography as “deeply personal”, a feat he achieved by forcing himself to spend time alone in the Scottish Highlands.
“Waypoints is a memoir with a difference,” Heughan said. “I wanted to tell the stories and share the experiences that have shaped me, but to do that I needed to challenge myself and spend some time in my own company, away from the distractions of everyday life.
“And for me there’s no better place to reflect than in the wild Scottish Highlands.”
The memoir is expected to be published on October 25, 2022 by Radar. Briony Gowlett, the Radar publisher who acquired the English rights to the book, also called it not only a biography but a “love letter” to Scotland.
Gowlett said: “With the walk itself as the backdrop to the narrative, the result is a love letter to the wild Scottish landscape that means so much to Sam, and a charming, funny, wise, and searching insight to the world through his eyes.”
The publisher went on to praise Heughan’s “dedication” as an author and tease that readers should expect the journey will be equally revealing to Sam as to them.
He said: “It’s a privilege to be working with Sam on his first solo project, a lead title for the Radar list. He is a hugely dedicated author who continues to grow in this space, and I feel especially excited to see this book connect with readers and show another side to Sam.
“Waypoints is a deeply personal journey that reveals as much to Sam about himself as it does to his readers.”
Heughan is also the co-author of two previous books with fellow actor Graham McTavish, Clanlands and The Clanlands Almanac.
Outlander airs on Starz in the US and streams on STARZPLAY in the UK.
