Jenna Ortega’s latest film, the psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, is reportedly already eyeing its digital release date less than one month after its theatrical debut. The news breaks after the movie was heavily criticized and bombed at the box office
When to Stream reports that Hurry Up Tomorrow will head to video on demand and digital platforms on June 6, 2025. Lionsgate has not confirmed this date, and it may be subject to change. The film had its theatrical debut on May 16, and was slammed as being a vanity project for its writer, producer and star, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. It is a companion to The Weeknd’s album of the same name, with the singer and actor starring as a fictionalized version of himself. Hurry Up Tomorrow chronicles his struggles with depression and insomnia as he meets a mysterious stalker fan named Anima (played by Ortega).
The Weeknd praised Ortega’s acting in the film, revealing that she even took the reins in one scene. “Jenna brought so much depth to the character. There was a scene where [director/co-writer] Trey [Edward Shults] and I looked at each other like, ‘On paper, this is just ridiculous — how is it going to translate on screen?’,” he revealed. “[S]he said, ‘I have an idea.’ She led that whole scene — none of it was rehearsed, and a lot of my reactions in it are not acting.”
Hurry Up Tomorrow was released alongside stiff competition from Final Destination Bloodlines and proceeded to become a box office flop. As of June 2, the film has grossed only $6 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million. With only a 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the overall critics’ consensus reads: “On second thought, let’s fast-forward to the work week.”
Audiences have been more forgiving of the film, as Hurry Up Tomorrow’s Popcornmeter rating is “fresh” at 64% approval. It has frequently been labeled as an extended music video or a vanity project, with most of its appeal being geared toward The Weeknd’s fanbase. Tesfaye wrote the screenplay alongside Shults (It Comes At Night) and Reza Fahim. He also produced the movie and contributed to the film’s score.
Jenna Ortega’s Other Roles Have Proven More Successful
Hurry Up Tomorrow is far from Ortega’s most successful film, with the Wednesday actress having starred in other films and television series that have resonated with a much wider audience. In 2024, she joined the cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as Astrid Deetz, with the long-awaited Tim Burton sequel delighting audiences and grossing over $450 million dollars.
Later in 2025, a second season of Wednesday is scheduled to hit Netflix, with Ortega also stepping into the role of executive producer for Season 2. She has numerous other upcoming projects, including a thriller film from Cathy Yan titled The Gallerist and a dystopian sci-fi movie with Taika Waititi titled Klara and the Sun. She is also set to star alongside Glen Powell and Samuel L. Jackson in an upcoming and currently untitled J.J. Abrams film.
