The Boys premiered in 2019, and it has been a major hit for Prime Video since. The satirical superhero show is set to return in 2026 with the fifth and final season, which will bring back Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles.
The actor joined the series, which comes from Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, in Season 3. He plays the first Vought International “superhero,” Soldier Boy. The character had a brief appearance in Season 4, but it marked a meaningful connection in the finale, and Ackles is set to return in Season 5 with a bigger role. Speaking to CBR ahead of the release of his upcoming action drama, Prime Video’s Countdown, Jensen Ackles gave an exciting filming update for The Boys Season 5.
As he addressed the differences between broadcast and streaming for television, Ackles also revealed that he has worked on Countdown and The Boys back to back. He also shared an exciting update: that he finished his scenes for The Boys Season 5.
“Well, look, I’ll say this: We were doing 23 episodes per season on Supernatural and it was a grind to do broadcast TV at that pace and to that extent,” Ackles highlighted. “Now, I’m conditioned for it. I mean, people ask me, “How are you working so much? Because The Boys is currently filming Season 5 right now.”
The Boys has been filming Season 5 since November 2024, and Ackles revealed when filming might be over: “They finish, I think, next month.” He added, “I just finished The Boys on Tuesday, [June 10th], and I think I’ve got all my stuff done. But I don’t know. You never know. They might have to bring me back for some other stuff.”
Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy Has a Bigger Story Ahead
Although he didn’t appear much in Season 4 and had a surprise cameo in the finale, Jensen Ackles’ time on The Boys is not over. The actor was teased to become a prominent figure in the final season, which will explore Soldier Boy’s relationship with Homelander (Antony Starr).
“You know, what we realized was we really hadn’t explored the father-son relationship much between Homelander and Soldier Boy,” Kripke following The Boys Season 4’s finale in July 2024. “There’s a lot of material there, how Soldier Boy feels about Homelander, how Homelander feels about his dad, and so we really wanted to dig into that relationship.”
The creator added, “Soldier Boy is really driven to kill Butcher after Butcher betrayed him in Season 3. So he’s just an excellent antagonist, to switch sides and basically, you know, to be with the Supes.”
In a different interview, Kripke highlighted, “Soldier Boy is a fan favorite. So it made perfect sense that once HL has control of the government, he would learn that his father is on ice. And this won’t be the last we see of him.”
After the show ends, Ackles has his own The Boys spinoff coming. He is set to star in Vought Rising, the prequel spinoff show, alongside Aya Cash as Stormfront/Liberty.
The Boys Season 5 doesn’t have a release date but it’s expected to premiere in 2026 on Prime Video.
