The thing about Magic: The Gathering players is that they are all around you. Even people you might not expect can be surprisingly big fans of the game. In fact, two members of the Outlander cast would spend their time between takes playing each other. Charles Vandervaart, who joined the cast as William in season seven, says that he and one of his co-stars bonded over their mutual love of Magic: The Gathering.

“You know what? So Richard Rankin, who plays Roger, is like a bigger Magic player than I am,” Charles Vandervaart admitted to Popverse’s own Ashley V. Robinson during an interview at C2E2 2025. “And he’s been playing since, you know, he was a young kid.”

The big question, of course, is if the two found the time to play together on set. And, because you can’t put two Magic: The Gathering players in the same room for long before a game breaks out, the answer was obviously yes. “Every single day during season eight, the filming of season eight, when we both weren’t filming, we were playing Magic.”

Now we can’t get the image of these two actors, decked out in their period costumes and their long hair tied back, hunched over a table together as they played a quick game of Magic: The Gathering. Bonus points if they managed to do it in one of the gorgeous sets we see in the Outlander series. If the two don’t get together for an Outlander Plays Magic YouTube channel, they are missing a trick.
