Showtime has announced a big twist for the Dexter franchise following the cancellation of one of its spin-off shows.

Originally running between 2006 and 2013, Dexter followed the life of a serial killer named Dexter Morgan who worked within the Miami Metro Police Department.

The popular show recently received the sequel and prequel treatment, with 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, 2024’s Dexter: Original Sin and this year’s Dexter: Resurrection.

According to Deadline, prequel series Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled after one season despite receiving a renewal announcement back in April.

Premiering late last year and wrapping on Valentine’s Day, Original Sin starred Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter alongside Patrick Dempsey, Christian Slater, Christina Milian and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The show follows a 15-year-old Dexter as he struggles to come to terms with his murderous urges while working as a forensics team intern at the police department.

According to Deadline’s report, the ’90s-set prequel has now been cancelled, while the latest instalment in the franchise Dexter: Resurrection is moving forward with a season 2 writers’ room.

While a second season of Resurrection has not been officially announced, the article reports that the writers room has been commissioned “with the intention of greenlighting the new season subject to budget approvals”.

Currently in its first season, the third spin-off, which has proved popular among critics, follows on from the events of New Blood in which Dexter was shot by his son Harrison.

In Resurrection, Dexter wakes up from a coma and finds that Harrison has fled without a trace and he travels to New York City in search of his son.

The synopsis reads: “As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together.”

Michael C Hall reprises his role as Dexter and is joined on the cast by Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Eric Stonestreet and Neil Patrick Harris.
