Jensen Ackles Officially Returns to ‘Supernatural’ as Dean Winchester, But With An Unexpected Twist

Jensen Ackles is returning as Dean Winchester, but this time, the beloved Supernatural character is heading into a terrifying new adventure without his brother by his side. A brand-new comic book series gives Dean a solo story, setting the stage for dangerous supernatural enemies, gruesome encounters, and a mission that could push him further than ever before.

Published by Dynamite Entertainment, Supernatural: Dean Winchester #1 went on sale October 7. Written by Chuck Brown with artwork by Rapha Lobosco, the first issue picks up after the shocking events of Dynamite’s flagship Supernatural comic series finale. Dean is injured and alone, facing a new chapter in his life that could prove more dangerous than anything he has encountered before.

The launch also includes special photo covers featuring Ackles, alongside variant covers by Marguerite Sauvage, Keyla Valerio, and Stephen Byrne. Preview pages have already offered a glimpse of just how dark Dean’s new adventures could become.

Dean Winchester Hunts a Terrifying New Enemy

The first issue sets the stage for a chilling story in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. With Dean on his own, he must investigate a case that his father was never able to solve — and the answer may force him to take on something far more powerful than an ordinary monster.

As Dynamite teases, “The streets of New Orleans are crawling with creepiness, and the elder Winchester brother is determined to close a case his dad never could.” The publisher adds that “To do so, he might have to murder a god.”

The preview begins in the Okefenokee Swamp, on the border between Georgia and Florida, where a couple looking for privacy encounters a terrifying supernatural creature. Its glowing red eyes and demonic grin make it clear that the pair have stumbled into something far beyond their control.

“If you scream, you die,” the creature warns them.

As the couple attempts to escape, the monster delivers another chilling message: “Screaming is bad, but running is worse.”

It then explains the rules governing their gruesome fate: “The screaming wakes them up. The running makes them chase. One of them is coming now. My pet, my fetchers, my salvation and your… doom.”

After the couple meets a horrifying end, the creature reveals that its hunger remains unsatisfied. “I’m still not strong enough. I’m still hungry. More.”

Although Dean does not feature prominently in the initial preview pages, the story makes clear that the mysterious entity will become a major part of his investigation.

Dean’s Next Mission Could Be His Most Dangerous Yet

Dynamite has already offered a glimpse of what awaits Dean in the second issue, promising a threat capable of causing widespread devastation.

According to the publisher’s synopsis, Dean will team up with the mysterious Florida Man to hunt down the Shadow Man, a terrifying entity that can jump from one body to another. The stakes are enormous, as the creature threatens to kill thousands unless Dean discovers how to stop it.

Supernatural: Dean Winchester #2 is scheduled for release on November 4. By the third issue, expected in December, Dean’s pursuit of the Shadow Man will take him to South Carolina, where he will encounter the Lizard Man, who is under the entity’s control.

The story could become even more dangerous when Dean faces the possibility of making a desperate deal. Dynamite has teased a “horrible bargain” that might tempt the experienced hunter to accept a devastating offer — even if doing so means selling his soul.

For a character who has repeatedly risked everything to protect others, that possibility sets up a particularly dark direction for the new series.

Jared Padalecki’s Sam Winchester Is Getting His Own Series, Too

Dean is not the only Winchester brother returning to the comic book world. Jared Padalecki is also appearing on the cover of a companion series, Supernatural: Sam Winchester, giving fans separate adventures centered on both brothers.

Written by Paulina Ganucheau, known for Disney Villains: Maleficent, the Sam-focused series features artwork by Kendall Goode, whose credits include The Terminator: Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. Like Dean’s comic, Sam’s series will also feature special variant covers starring the actor who portrayed him on television.

New issues of the companion series are scheduled to arrive monthly, offering fans another way to revisit the world of Supernatural through fresh stories featuring its iconic characters.

The two solo series mark an exciting development for fans who have followed Dean and Sam through their long-running television adventures. While the brothers are now getting separate comic book stories, their familiar blend of supernatural horror, dangerous investigations, and personal sacrifices remains central to the franchise.

For Dean, the new series promises an especially brutal challenge, with a godlike monster, the mysterious Shadow Man, and a potentially soul-destroying bargain waiting ahead.
