Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy has lined up his next project fresh off winning the Best Actor Oscar for Christopher Nolan’s epic.

The project in mind is another historical journey as Universal has completed a preemptive acquisition of the book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America.

Written by Mark A. Bradley, the story takes place in 1960s Pennsylvania and concerns coal miner Jock Yablonski, who became an activist in the mine workers union. Yablonski then ran afoul of union president Tony Boyle.

Yablonski subsequently ran against Boyle, who was eventually reelected. Boyle is said to have ordered the murder of Yablonski, who was killed after three attempts.

However, Yabonski’s lawyer son Chip made it his mission to bring Boyle to justice and avenge his father in the courts. This is what the film will depict and Murphy, who will also produce, will star as Chip.

Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow) will write the script.

This isn’t the only exciting project Murphy will be a part of. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight recently revealed that Murphy will return for the upcoming movie.

“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight said, before announcing that filming will commence “in September just down the road in Digbeth”.

Knight also said that Murphy’s Oscar win for Oppenheimer “was so deserved,” stating: “I mean he’s brilliant, and he’s such a great human being and he leads the line when we’re shooting and he’s so level-headed and straightforward. He deserves everything he gets.”
